The medication manufacturer recommends that the medication abortion pills be started in the morning. If there are complications, you have easier access to medical attention and the medication will cause heavy bleeding and cramping which may cause you not to sleep through the night if you decide to start them later.

You may have sex after the physician has cleared you to resume regular activity. This will happen at your follow up appointment if there are no concerns from the physician. It is highly recommended that contraception be used post abortion as many women can get pregnant immediately following their abortion.

With the medication abortion, you will bleed for 24 to 48 hours heavily and then bleeding will taper off like a menstrual cycle. With the surgical abortion, the bleeding will vary from patient to patient. Some people experience little to no bleeding while others experience heavy bleeding. Do not use tampons for two weeks after an abortion and contact NFWS immediately if you saturate two oversized maxi pads with blood per hour.

Each person is different. Some people experience mild cramping while others experience very heavy cramping. Everyone has a different pain tolerance level.
